What are dark spots?

Dark spots (also called age spots and sun spots) are small, dark patches that show up after years of sun exposure, thanks to an overproduction of melanin. This form of hyperpigmentation is harmless but can make your skin look uneven or aged.

What causes dark spots?

Hyperpigmentation (dark spots) forms when your skin ramps up melanin production in response to sun exposure. Over time, that excess pigment clusters together, creating dark spots that refuse to fade on their own.

I recently went to see Stacey for help with my rosacea, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. From the moment I walked in, she made me feel comfortable and really took the time to understand my skin concerns. Her knowledge and care are incredible. After my treatments, my skin is looking amazing — calmer, clearer, and healthier than it has in a long time. Stacey is truly wonderful at what she does, and you can tell she genuinely cares about her clients and their results.

I had my first visit at Arnorior Med Spa and was genuinely impressed from start to finish. Stacey has created a space that feels both spotless and cozy, the kind of environment where you immediately feel comfortable and taken care of. What really stood out, though, was her knowledge. She is a true laser guru (and proudly a laser junkie in the best way possible!). She took the time to explain everything thoroughly, answered all my questions with confidence, and clearly has a deep passion for what she does. As someone with a medical esthetics background myself, I’m extremely picky about who I trust with my skin, especially my face, and Stacey exceeded my expectations. Her professionalism, expertise, and attention to detail made me feel completely at ease. If you’re looking for someone skilled, honest, and genuinely invested in delivering great results, I highly recommend booking with Stacy. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

I have tried several top rated skincare clinics over the years and this one, hands down has beaten them all. The personal care and long term dedication you receive is unreal. They want you to feel your best and take the time to make sure you do. It’s not about doing one treatment and never returning, it’s about learning how to properly care for your skin for those long term results and preventive care. I could go on and on, just go here!

Loved my Botox treatment, CO2 resurfacing, and XERF combo at Arnprior Med Spa. The VISIA analysis gave a clear baseline, and all three treatments delivered: smoother texture from CO2, relaxed lines from Botox, and my jawline and neck tightening from XERF. My face has been given a youthful boost without changing my face or looking unnatural. Visible improvements after minimal downtime. Great experience—definitely back for more!

I’ve been going to Stacey’s Clinic for almost two years now and every time she blows me away. I’ve never met someone so driven in keeping up with all the new technology and latest skin treatments.Sometimes I go in not know what I need or what to ask for, but she always recommends what would work best for me. I will continue to speak highly of her and her clinic.

Treat Your Dark Spots & Sun Spots in Arnprior & Ottawa

Serving clients across Arnprior, Kanata, the Ottawa Valley, Pembroke, Petawawa, Kinburn, Pakenham, Carleton Place, and Almonte. Hyperpigmentation treatments are just a short drive away.

Frequently asked questions

Hyperpigmentation refers to any darkening of the skin, including dark spots, age spots, melasma, sun spots, and sun damage. All brown spots are a type of hyperpigmentation, but not all hyperpigmentation comes from sun damage. Conditions like melasma or PIH from acne are also forms of hyperpigmentation but may have different triggers.

Laser resurfacing treatments are the most effective way to break down pigment clusters and help the body flush them out naturally.

Skincare plays a critical supporting role by shutting down overactive melanocytes, preventing new pigmentation from forming, and gradually lightening existing spots.

You will notice a reduction in brown spots or sun spots in 1-3 treatments, depending on the severity of the pigment and the specific laser treatment you choose.

Yes. Hyperpigmentation can return after treatment depending on its underlying cause.

Sun exposure is the most common trigger, which is why daily SPF and sun protection are critical to maintaining results.

However, hyperpigmentation can also recur from hormonal changes (as in melasma) or post-inflammatory responses (like after acne breakouts or skin injury).

Protecting your skin and managing underlying triggers is key to maintaining clear, even-toned skin long-term.

The downtime depends on the laser treatment you choose. MDF Laser Toning has no downtime, apart from some redness day-of, but the CO2 laser can have up to a week of downtime.

You can significantly reduce your risk of hyperpigmentation, but prevention depends on the cause.

For sun-induced spots (like sun spots and age spots), daily sunscreen use and minimizing UV exposure are essential.

For hormonally driven conditions like melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) after acne, consistent skincare and managing triggers are key to prevention and long-term control.

Melasma vs sun spots: both are forms of hyperpigmentation. Sun spots are brown or dark spots that develop due to sun exposure, often on areas like the face, hands, and shoulders. Melasma, on the other hand, is caused by hormonal changes, typically appearing as larger, irregular patches. Melasma is much more common in women, whereas sun spots impact all genders equally.
