What are enlarged pores?

Visible pores across the nose and cheeks

Pores are normal openings within the skin associated with hair follicles and sebaceous glands.

They cannot simply be “closed,” and having visible pores does not mean that your skin is unhealthy.

However, pores can become more noticeable because of factors such as oil production, congestion, skin texture, genetics and age-related changes in the support surrounding the follicular opening.

They are often most visible through the:

Nose + Inner Cheeks + Forehead + Central Face

The goal of treatment is therefore not to promise “poreless” skin.

It is to determine why the pores are prominent and improve the factors making them more visible.

What is actually happening

Why Do Pores Become More Visible?

Oil Production

Higher sebum production is strongly associated with larger visible facial pores.

When oil production is significant, improving sebum control and keeping the follicular opening clear can help pores appear less prominent.

Congestion

Oil and accumulated skin cells within the follicle can make pores and sebaceous filaments more noticeable.

Congestion and enlarged pores are related, but they are not exactly the same problem.

Changes in Skin Structure

Collagen and elastic support around the follicular opening influence how the surrounding skin looks.

As skin quality changes with age and cumulative sun exposure, pores may become more apparent alongside fine lines and uneven texture.

Genetics + Anatomy

Some people naturally have more visible pores.

Sebaceous gland activity, follicle size, skin type and genetics all contribute, which is why treatment can reduce the appearance of pores but cannot create completely poreless skin.

Our approach

Our Approach: Why Skin Preparation Comes First

Enlarged-looking pores are not always something that should be treated with a laser first.

Oil production, congestion, uneven cell turnover and overall skin health can all influence how prominent pores appear. For many clients, we begin by improving the condition of the skin before deciding whether a procedure is necessary.

Regulate

Address excess oil, congestion and buildup.

Support

Improve skin function, resilience and healthy cell turnover.

Reassess

Once the skin is better regulated, determine what texture remains.

If pores remain prominent once the skin is better regulated, we can then determine whether deeper collagen remodelling is appropriate.

Not every visible pore requires collagen remodelling. When excess oil, blackheads, sebaceous filaments or buildup within the follicle are contributing, we may begin with treatments designed to improve the surface environment of the skin.

HydraFacial combines cleansing, hydradermabrasion, extraction and hydration to help remove superficial buildup and improve the appearance of congested skin.

We may consider HydraFacial when enlarged-looking pores occur alongside blackheads, sebaceous filaments, dehydration, surface roughness or general congestion.

It does not change the anatomical size of a pore, but keeping the follicular opening clearer can make pores appear less noticeable.

Best for: Congestion · Blackheads · Hydration · Maintenance

Hollywood Spectra Carbon Peel

A Hollywood Spectra carbon peel in progress at our Arnprior clinic

The Hollywood Carbon Laser Peel combines a topical carbon lotion with the Hollywood Spectra 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser to exfoliate the skin and help address excess oil and follicular congestion.

We particularly consider it when visible pores occur alongside oily skin, congestion, acne-prone skin, uneven tone or dull surface texture.

The goal is not to permanently “shrink” pores. By improving oil, congestion and surface texture, the treatment can help pores appear cleaner and less prominent.

Best for: Oil · Congestion · Visible Pores · Acne-Prone Skin

Going deeper

When Skin Preparation + Surface Treatments Aren’t Enough

When oil and congestion are under better control but pores remain prominent, we look more closely at the structure surrounding the pore.

Changes in collagen support, cumulative sun exposure, acne scarring and deeper textural irregularity may require treatments that remodel the skin rather than simply clear the follicle.

For Enlarged Pores + Uneven Texture

Mosaic 3D is a 1550 nm non-ablative fractional laser that creates microscopic treatment zones within the skin while leaving surrounding tissue intact.

We particularly consider Mosaic when enlarged-looking pores occur alongside:

  • rough or uneven texture
  • early acne scarring
  • fine lines
  • textural irregularities
  • declining skin quality

Rather than attempting to “clean out” the pore, fractional resurfacing works by stimulating a controlled healing and remodelling response within the skin.

Downtime: Temporary redness and mild swelling; recovery varies with treatment intensity.

For Pores + Acne Scars + Dermal Texture

Genius RF Microneedling delivers controlled radiofrequency energy through microneedles positioned within selected depths of the dermis.

We particularly consider it when enlarged pores occur alongside:

  • acne scarring
  • uneven texture
  • fine lines
  • crepey skin
  • declining dermal firmness

Because RF Microneedling creates controlled fractional treatment within the dermis, it can address several components of skin texture within the same treatment plan.

Downtime: Temporary redness and swelling are common.

For More Advanced Texture + Pore Concerns

CO₂ laser resurfacing is a more intensive ablative option used when enlarged-looking pores occur alongside more significant textural change, acne scarring, wrinkles or photodamage.

The treatment creates controlled resurfacing and collagen remodelling rather than physically “shrinking the pore.”

Because CO₂ involves greater treatment intensity and recovery, it is generally not our starting point for someone whose only concern is mildly visible pores.

Downtime: Approximately 3–5 days for lighter treatments and 5–10+ days for more intensive resurfacing, depending on treatment depth and individual healing.

It is generally not our starting point for someone whose only concern is mildly visible pores.

Frequently asked questions

No.

Healthy skin has pores.

The realistic goal of treatment is to reduce their appearance and improve overall skin texture, not permanently eliminate them.

Yes, depending on why they are visible.

Ingredients used to manage oil, congestion and skin-cell turnover can make pores look less prominent over time.

Retinoids and salicylic acid are commonly used for concerns involving clogged pores, although the appropriate routine depends on the individual skin.

CO₂ resurfacing may improve the appearance of enlarged pores as part of broader improvement in skin texture and collagen remodelling.

Because it is a more intensive treatment, we are more likely to consider it when pores occur alongside acne scars, wrinkles, significant photodamage or more advanced textural concerns, rather than treating mildly visible pores alone.

HydraFacial can help when pores look more noticeable because of superficial congestion, blackheads, excess oil or buildup within the follicular opening.

The treatment does not permanently shrink pores, but cleansing, extraction and hydration can make the skin look smoother and pores appear less prominent.

For pores associated with acne scarring or deeper textural changes, treatments such as Mosaic 3D or RF Microneedling may be more appropriate.

Chemical peels can improve the appearance of pores when excess oil, congestion and abnormal surface buildup are contributing.

Ingredients such as salicylic, mandelic or other professionally selected acids can improve exfoliation and help keep the follicular opening clearer.

When pore visibility is primarily related to deeper skin texture or acne scarring, a peel alone is unlikely to provide the same level of remodeling as fractional laser or RF Microneedling.

Yes. Fractional RF microneedling has been clinically studied for enlarged facial pores.

At Arnprior Med Spa, we particularly consider Genius RF Microneedling when pore visibility occurs alongside acne scarring, uneven texture, fine lines or declining dermal firmness.

Mosaic 3D is a 1550 nm non-ablative fractional resurfacing laser used for concerns including enlarged-looking pores, fine texture and acne scarring.

Fractional treatment creates microscopic treatment zones that stimulate a progressive remodelling response within the skin.

They address the concern differently.

HydraFacial is primarily useful when congestion, blackheads, dehydration and surface buildup are contributing. It cleanses, extracts and hydrates the skin.

The Hollywood Carbon Laser Peel may be considered when enlarged-looking pores occur alongside excess oil, acne-prone skin and congestion. It combines carbon-assisted exfoliation with laser treatment.

Neither treatment is intended to remodel deeper acne scars or significant structural texture. When those concerns are present, fractional resurfacing or RF microneedling may be more appropriate.
