FACIAL AGING | ARNPRIOR + OTTAWA VALLEY
Changes in Facial Firmness & Skin Elasticity
Understand why facial contours, skin firmness and elasticity change over time — and which treatments can help when collagen loss and skin laxity are part of the problem.
Changes in facial firmness are a normal part of aging, but they do not happen for one single reason. Collagen changes, skin elasticity, facial support, tissue position and underlying anatomy can all influence how the cheeks, lower face, jawline and neck change over time.
At Arnprior Med Spa, treatment starts by understanding what is actually contributing to the change before deciding whether RF Microneedling, Fotona 4D, laser resurfacing or another approach makes sense.

Why Does Facial Firmness Change With Age?
Changes in facial firmness rarely come from one single process.
The skin gradually produces and maintains collagen differently. Elasticity changes. Facial fat and supporting structures change over time. The position of soft tissue can shift, and the underlying facial skeleton also changes with age.
Together, these changes can lead to:
• softer facial contours
• reduced jawline definition
• changes through the lower face
• less resilient or crepey-looking skin
• increased fine lines and folds
• changes through the neck
This is why we do not automatically treat every change in the lower face as a simple “skin-tightening” problem.
What Contributes to Loss of Facial Firmness?
Changes in Collagen + Elasticity
Collagen gives skin structure, while elastin contributes to its ability to stretch and return to shape.
With age and cumulative sun exposure, these structural components change. Skin may gradually become thinner, less resilient and less able to maintain the same firmness it had previously.
Changes in Facial Support
The face ages below the surface of the skin as well.
Changes occur within facial fat, connective tissues, supporting structures and bone. These deeper changes influence facial contour and how the skin is supported.
Changes in Tissue Position + Volume
Facial volume does not simply disappear with age — its distribution also changes.
This can alter the transition between the cheek, lower face, chin and jawline and contribute to a softer lower-face contour.
Individual Anatomy
Chin projection, jaw structure, facial shape, tissue thickness and the distribution of fullness beneath the chin all influence facial definition.
Two people with a similar degree of skin laxity may therefore look very different and may benefit from very different treatment plans.
Treatments for Facial Firmness + Skin Elasticity
The appropriate treatment depends on what is contributing to the change. For clients where skin laxity and declining dermal quality are important factors, our primary treatment approaches are Genius RF Microneedling and Fotona 4D. When significant pigmentation, wrinkles, sun damage or textural changes are present at the same time, laser resurfacing may also become part of the treatment strategy.
Genius RF Microneedling
Dermal Remodelling + Firmness
Genius RF Microneedling delivers controlled radiofrequency energy through microneedles positioned within selected depths of the dermis.
We particularly consider it when changes in firmness occur alongside:
• crepey skin
• fine lines + wrinkles
• enlarged pores
• acne scarring
• uneven texture
• mild-to-moderate skin laxity
Because the treatment targets the dermis directly, it allows us to address skin structure, texture and firmness together.

• lower-face softness
• perioral aging
• nasolabial folds
• fine lines
• changes in facial contour
• declining overall skin quality

When Skin Quality Is Part of the Concern
Sometimes the face appears older not because of laxity alone, but because firmness changes occur alongside wrinkles, pigmentation, sun damage and uneven texture.
Laser resurfacing can address these components of skin aging.
Depending on your skin and goals, treatments may include:
• LaseMD Ultra
• Mosaic 3D
• Er laser resurfacing
• CO₂ laser resurfacing
Laser resurfacing should not be presented as though it can surgically reposition facial tissue. Instead, its role is to improve skin quality, wrinkles, pigmentation and texture when these are contributing to the overall appearance of aging.

Not Sure What Is Causing the Change You’re Seeing?
You do not need to diagnose the concern or choose a device before your appointment.
We assess facial anatomy, skin firmness, tissue quality, texture, pigmentation, volume changes and your overall treatment goals first.
From there, we can determine whether Genius RF Microneedling, Fotona 4D, laser resurfacing, a staged treatment plan — or no non-surgical treatment at all — is the appropriate recommendation.
