Brown pigmentation is one of the most common reasons clients come to Arnprior Med Spa.

But there is an important distinction we make before recommending treatment:

Is this sun damage—or is this melasma?

They can sometimes look similar.

They can even exist on the same face.

But treating every brown patch as simple sun damage can lead to the wrong treatment strategy.

What Are Sun Spots?

Sun spots—often called solar lentigines—are areas of increased pigmentation associated with cumulative ultraviolet exposure.

They frequently appear on areas that have received years of sun exposure, including:

  • cheeks
  • forehead
  • nose
  • temples
  • hands
  • chest

These more discrete areas of pigment can often be approached differently from melasma.

What Does Melasma Look Like?

Melasma commonly presents as broader patches of pigmentation rather than one isolated brown spot.

Frequently affected areas include:

  • cheeks
  • forehead
  • upper lip
  • chin
  • central face

Hormonal influences and ultraviolet exposure are well-recognized contributors, and melasma has a tendency to recur.

That recurring nature is one reason we prefer to talk about managing melasma rather than promising to permanently remove it.

Why Does the Difference Matter?

Because the treatment goal is different.

With an isolated sun spot, the target may be relatively straightforward.

With melasma, we need to think about the broader pigment-producing process and the factors that continue stimulating it.

That means we may spend more time discussing:

  • daily sun protection
  • skincare
  • pigment-control ingredients
  • skin-barrier health
  • previous reactions to treatment
  • heat and UV exposure
  • maintenance after improvement

before deciding whether an in-clinic procedure should be added.

Why We Don’t Automatically Laser Every Brown Spot

Owning multiple laser platforms does not mean every pigmentation concern needs laser.

In fact, part of good treatment planning is knowing when not to use a device.

Melasma treatment can involve topical therapies, peels and selected energy-based treatments, but the appropriate strategy depends on the individual presentation.

At Arnprior Med Spa, our approach is generally to first understand:

What type of pigmentation are we seeing?

How reactive is the skin?

Is the pigment stable or frequently recurring?

What is the client currently using at home?

Has the skin been prepared appropriately?

Only then do we decide what role—if any—a laser should play.

Why Skincare Matters So Much With Melasma

An in-clinic procedure may take an hour.

Your skin is exposed to your environment every day.

That is why home care becomes such an important part of a melasma strategy.

A customized skincare regimen may be used to support pigment control, improve overall skin health and help maintain the progress made during professional treatments.

For many of our melasma clients, the skincare program is not an optional extra added onto the laser.

It is part of the treatment strategy itself.

Can Melasma and Sun Damage Exist Together?

Absolutely.

This is where pigmentation treatment becomes more interesting.

A client may simultaneously have:

  • melasma
  • freckles
  • solar lentigines
  • post-inflammatory pigmentation
  • uneven tone
  • visible vascular redness

Treating that person based on one photograph or one label can oversimplify what is happening.

Instead, we may need to prioritize each component differently.

Our Approach at Arnprior Med Spa

For pigmentation concerns, we generally think in stages:

1. Assess

Identify the pattern and likely type of pigmentation.

2. Prepare

Establish appropriate skincare and sun protection.

3. Treat Strategically

Select a peel, laser or other procedure only when it makes sense for the specific pigmentation concern.

4. Monitor

Compare standardized photographs and VISIA imaging when appropriate.

5. Maintain

Melasma management does not end when the pigment improves.

Long-term maintenance is an important part of reducing recurrence.

Not Sure Whether You Have Melasma or Sun Damage?

You do not need to diagnose it yourself from Google images.

If you have persistent brown patches, recurring pigmentation or discoloration that seems to worsen every summer, we can assess the skin and determine the most appropriate next step.

The goal isn’t simply to remove pigment. It is to understand why the pigment is there before we treat it.
