The Ultimate Skin Guide for Your 50s
Your 50s are a turning point.
You’ve done the eye creams. You’ve tried the facials. You’ve bought the expensive serum your friend swears by… and you’re still not seeing results.
If you’re anything like our patients in their 50s, you’re done wasting time and money. You’re ready for treatments that actually work.
You’re not trying to chase your 30-year old face. You just want to look like the best version of yourself and take control of what comes next.
With the right strategy, we can make that happen.
In this blog post, we’ll share the treatments we typically recommend to patients in their 50s, and the science behind why they work.
What changes in your 50s?

Everything.
While it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what’s different, many of our patients notice a shift in how their skin looks, feels, and behaves.
The most common skin concerns in your 50s:
- Sun damage or visible brown spots (called hyperpigmentation)
- Smoker’s lines around the mouth
- Crow’s feet and crepey skin around the eyes
- Deepened 11s (frown lines)
- Jowling or loss of jawline definition
- Dull skin tone or rough skin texture
These visible changes might seem like surface-level issues, but they’re usually caused by deeper structural shifts happening within and beneath the skin.
Slower skin cell turnover
One of the biggest shifts to your skin in your 50s is the change in your skin cell turnover cycle.
Skin cell turnover is the process of shedding old, damaged skin cells and replacing them with new ones. In your 20s, this happens roughly every 28 days. But by your 50s, that cycle slows to 40 days or more.
As a result, dead cells stick around longer, dulling your complexion, trapping pigment, and making your skin less resilient overall.
Slower Collagen Production
Collagen is the protein that gives your skin structure, firmness, and the ability to repair itself. It’s what made your skin look plump and smooth in your younger years (even during your party phase. Can you believe you survived that?).
But by your 50s, collagen production has slowed significantly. You’re also losing more of it each year. This is especially true during and after menopause, when hormone changes accelerate that breakdown.
Without enough collagen, your skin becomes thinner, weaker, and more prone to wrinkling, sagging, and visible texture. That’s why many patients in this age group start to notice a sudden change in how their skin behaves.
Fat Pad Shifting and Bone Density Loss
Every face is built on a foundation of bone, muscle, and fat. In your 50s, two major shifts start to happen beneath the surface.
First, the fat pads in your face begin to shrink and shift downward. These pads once gave your cheeks lift and fullness, but as they descend, the lower half of the face starts to look heavier and looser.
At the same time, your bone structure begins to recede. Yes, really: bone loss is a normal part of aging, and it affects your face, too. As your bones lose density, they offer less structural support to the skin and soft tissue.
As the skin loses its underlying support structures, it begins to wrinkle and sag.
These underlying changes are one of the biggest drivers of visible aging, which is why many patients in their 50s start to feel like their face suddenly looks different, even if they can’t quite put their finger on why.
The goal in your 50s: revive, regenerate, restore
You don’t need a million treatments. You just need the right ones. Treatments that:
- Revive skin cell turnover
- Regenerate fresh collagen
- Restore lost volume
With the right treatment strategy, your 50s can be one of the most transformative decades for your skin.
Skincare strengthens the skin
In your 50s, high-quality skincare is no longer optional.
At this stage, your skin needs more support: especially as its natural repair process starts to slow down.
Medical-grade skincare helps restart that process. The right products support your skin’s renewal cycle so that fresh, healthy cells rise to the surface faster. This not only improves tone and texture, but strengthens your skin and makes it more responsive to in-clinic treatments like lasers and microneedling.
However, none of it matters if you’re skipping sunscreen.
Don’t skip the sunscreen
If skincare had a superhero, it would be sunscreen.
Sunscreen doesn’t just block sunburns: it protects your collagen from breaking down. Since collagen loss is one of the biggest reasons your skin starts to wrinkle, sunscreen is basically your insurance policy.
Daily SPF use (yes, even when it’s cloudy, even when you’re “just running errands”) does more to prevent visible aging than any laser, serum, or injectable ever could.
That being said, there are several in-clinic treatments that we recommend to nearly all of our patients in their 50s.
Target sun damage with the right laser combinations
Sun damage shows up more prominently in your 50s as visible brown spots, uneven tone, and rough texture.
Sun damage can be prevented with sunscreen and skincare can help improve the skin so it cycles it out more quickly, but sun damage is most effectively treated with laser treatments.
Fortunately, we have a treatment designed for exactly this that is highly effective. In just one session, we will combine two advanced lasers:
The LaseMD Ultra laser for resurfacing and renewal
The LaseMD Ultra resurfaces the skin and clears pigment by creating tiny thermal channels in the skin. This process stimulates collagen, smooths texture, and strengthens the skin overall.
It also peels away old skin cells and helps sweep up accumulated pigmentation that has come to the surface from years of sun exposure.
The Hollywood Spectra laser for targeted pigment correction
We follow the LaseMD with the Hollywood Spectra laser to target any remaining areas of pigment that are darker or more stubborn. This laser uses photoacoustic energy to break pigment into smaller particles, allowing the body to clear it more effectively without damaging the surrounding tissue.
Together, these two lasers are incredibly effective at erasing years of sun damage. Additionally, you’ll notice an improvement to your fine lines and overall skin health and laxity.
When we combine these two lasers, most patients experience 3–5 days of redness and dryness, similar to a light sunburn. Considering how powerful the results are, the downtime is a no-brainer.
Restore facial structure with undetectable filler
Patients are often surprised to learn that filler is one of the most effective anti-aging treatments available.
Facial structure changes
Remember how we mentioned that your bone density is shrinking and facial fat pads are moving? These changes impact your face over time in often-overlooked ways. It can be difficult to point out in the mirror, but if you compare the shape of your face today to 30 years ago, you will see the difference.
Volume loss becomes especially noticeable in your 50s (thanks, menopause). The cheeks look flatter, temples begin to hollow, and skin folds under the jawline.
How filler helps
Filler replaces lost volume and helps restore the structure of the face. By replacing what’s been lost, filler supports the skin from underneath, enhancing the results of collagen-stimulating treatments.
That doesn’t mean we add volume everywhere. We use strategic, subtle dermal filler placements to lift and restore the facial structure in a natural-looking way.
“Filler” is made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a molecule that already exists in your skin. The filler form of HA breaks down naturally in the body, just like your homemade HA. HA filler is not permanent, and we never overfill.
If you DO decide you don’t like it, we can always dissolve it. However, many of our patients in their 50s are shocked by just how much they love their filler results and how natural they look.
PRP injections for subtle lift and skin repair
If you’re not yet ready for filler, we recommend you try PRP injections. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can provide subtle volume using your own blood-derived growth factors.
PRP is made by drawing a small sample of your blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. These platelets are rich in growth factors that support healing and regeneration.
When injected into the skin, PRP boosts collagen production, improves elasticity, and provides a natural-looking plumpness to the treated area.
The results are temporary, but it’s a great way to see what a little lift might look like before committing to filler.
You have more options than you think
Aging well isn’t about doing every treatment. It’s about doing the right things, in the right order, with the right provider.
